The name, 'Mute,' derives from it lack, or lesser tendency, to vocalise. Though it can be vocal when stressed or territorial.
Pairs bond for life and can live around 10 years on average in the wild.
The distinctive feature of the bird, is the 'Cob,' at the head of its beak. This being larger and more pronounced in the male.
These are the genus most associated with love, romance and purity.

Northern Fulmar

The Northern, or 'Arctic' Fulmar is an abundant seabird found primarily in subarctic regions of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans. There has only ever been one confirmed sighting in the Southern Hemisphere, with a single bird sighted south of New Zealand. (I always wondered where that early Sat-Nav I sold on Ebay ended up).
They produce a stomach oil made up of wax esters and triglycerides that is stored in the proventriculus, a rod shaped organ between the esophagus and gizzard. This can be sprayed out of their mouths from a very early age as a defense against avian predators which can ultimately end in their death. This compound has a very high nutrient value and is used to feed their chicks or sustain adults in long flights.

Great Cormorant
(Phalacrocorax carbo. Juvenile)
A large aquatic bird feeding mainly on fish. Although they dive for their food, their feathers are not waterproof. This aids their speed underwater. This is why you will commonly see the bird perched, with wings spread wide, to dry their plumage.
They do look like they have remained unchanged for eons. Definitely more "Archaeopteryx" than "Goose."

Goosander? Really? It sounds as though the name for this beautiful bird was picked by a committee, suffering from budget overruns, on a Friday afternoon when everyone was making plans for the weekend!

They are typically divers, living on fish & aquatic invertebrates. The mother has obviously been giving the young instruction.

This species is the ancestor of most breeds of domestic ducks. Its naturally evolved gene pool has been diluted as a result of breeding with domestic ducks and genetically similar other species.
This interbreeding could result in the extinction of many true lineage species of waterfowl.

In some areas the mallard is regarded as an invasive species due to the fact it can live, breed and thrive in urban areas. Outcompeting and interbreeding with sensitive species of waterfowl before development.

They have an omnivorous diet, ranging from insects, small crustaceans, plant matter and even the feces of other birds.
​
There have been reports of them eating frogs and fish. In 2017, a flock of Mallards in Romania were observed hunting the fledglings of other migratory birds.

Outside breeding season, they sometimes congregate in large flocks known as "Sordes".
