Sentinel

One of life's Epiphanies, this old fella has bordered the field at the back of my house for as long as I can remember. From my earliest memories as a child of the country, taken rather for granted. Now that I am maturing in years I begin to notice those familiar objects and places that have been a constant in my life. Things that are so common that they remain virtually unseen. Then, one winter day, I walked around the back of my house to be struck with a stunning view of frost covered winter branches with everything just right, and I felt a lump in my throat form. He has stood as silent Sentinel my whole life, obviously changed from my earliest memories, but so slowly those changes went unnoticed and I realised it mirrors my own. Both showing age, but a determination to stand. Thank you for staying strong old friend, and for giving me one of those "Moments."
On the approach to Kirkwall by Ferry stands this ancient monolith. For how long it has stood, carved out from the cliff by the relentless attention of wind and weather, I can not say. Nor how long it will remain.
But, for however long it remains, it will hold us in awe, defying gravity & the elements. A vista of the beauty that remains as a result of the elements.
Nothing is impossible.
